Trump Threatens Financial Penalties on Mexico for Illegal Drugs, Migration

I'll do one or the other.

"We're also going to do something having to do with tariffs on drugs because. hundreds of thousands of lives (are) ruined a year in our country", he said. One economist predicted that would cause the entire United States auto industry to shut down within a week, because every U.S. auto plant depends on parts made in Mexico.

"To me, that would kind of be an incentive for Mexico to not move so quickly to ratify the USMCA", said Welles Orr, who served as assistant USA trade representative under President George H.W. Bush.

Trump has been increasingly exasperated at his inability to halt the swelling number of migrants entering the US, including thousands who have being released after arriving because border officials have no space for them.

The President stopped in Calexico, California, on Friday afternoon to tour replacement border fencing and participate in a border security roundtable.

Trump's claims that the United States was "full" prompted immediate pushback from his critics.

The Debate - Erdogan fatigue? Turkish president suffers setbacks in local elections
The capital city was held by Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, the AKP, and its Islamic-oriented predecessor for 25 years. A strategic decision by a pro-Kurdish party to sit out critical races in major cities contributed to the opposition's gains.

It was the latest, seemingly sudden attempt at new leverage by a president struggling to solve what his administration has called a border "crisis." "I may shut it down at some point but I would rather do tariffs". That wave is expected to deliver one million migrants into the United States by October, and it is made possible because Democrats are blocking any reform the border loopholes.

The Republican president's latest pronouncements, issued informally in rapid succession, are in response to a rising number of migrants, many of them families with children, travelling northward from Central America through Mexico and to the southern USA border. Part of it is because of the fact that the country is doing so well.

Though Mr Trump, who has pulled a series of about-faces in recent days, walked away from this threat to close the border, he still intends to highlight conditions at the boundary with Mexico.

Trump had already appeared to be easing off his border threat earlier this week.

On Thursday, he told reporters at the White House he wants to see Mexico stop more migrants at its southern border. "The big flow will stop", Trump Tweeted.

Trump also said he could still order the border closed later.

The leaders of the US, Mexico and Canada signed the successor deal to NAFTA in November after more than a year of negotiations. But there again, that can hit US companies, such as General Motors, which is a major car-maker in Mexico.

House Democrats officially filed their lawsuit Friday afternoon challenging President Trump's plans to shift money to build his border wall, demanding federal judges step in and referee between the two sides.

"Mexico has been absolutely terrific for the last four days", he said. He has spent more than 30 years in law enforcement, starting in 1985 with the U.S. Border Patrol.

Those families, along with unaccompanied children, are subject to specific laws and court settlements that prevent them from being immediately sent back to their home countries. Congress had voted to block the emergency declaration but Trump vetoed the measure.

There had been some speculation Trump would use the visit to announce a partial closure of the border, having been making threats to that end this week, however the flying visit proved to be less eventful than some commentators predicted.
