Chicago prosecutor defends decision to drop Jussie Smollett charges

After criminal charges were dropped against Empire actor Jussie Smollett Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is now reviewing the circumstances of the sudden dismissal, KABC-TV reported the following day.

Chicago police provided a six-night hotel stay with separate rooms and 24-hour security to two brothers who said they were paid by Empire actor Jussie Smollett to stage a racist, anti-gay attack. Law enforcement will now not be able to acknowledge that Mr. Smollett was indicted and charged with these frightful crimes and the full record of what occurred will be forever hidden from public view.

"The case was dismissed".

On Tuesday all the charges against him were dropped - but the city's mayor called that move "a whitewash". An attorney who has represented the brothers, Gloria Schmidt, said that the pair did not testify as part of any plea deal and that they were not granted any immunity from prosecution. "He has cost Chicago a lot more than a $10,000 bond". The hotel stay was "from February 15 to February 21 at the Chicago South Loop Hotel near the city's McCormick Place convention center".

The FBI and Justice Department will review the "outrageous" case, the president wrote on Twitter.

The Chicago police superintendent, Eddie Johnson, was similarly displeased.

Smollett maintained his innocence as he addressed the media on Tuesday after charges were dropped.

The brothers testified before a grand jury, and Smollett was charged last month with filing a false police report about the attack.

State's Attorney Kim Foxx, facing a massive public backlash for allowing Smollett to skate on 16 felonies, claimed her office didn't ask for his file to be sealed, but couldn't explain how it had happened, stating it must have been done "inadvertently" and was "probably" in the process of being unsealed.

But Foxx told the outlet that a guilty verdict would not likely have led to a harsher effect for the actor. "I venture to say, even if he does get acting roles, they're probably not going to be productions". We appeared in court and pled not guilty. While she personally recused herself from the Smollett case, Foxx still manages the prosecutor who dropped the charges.

Still, questions remain. Did he get the star treatment?
