May to seek Brexit extension amid United Kingdom 'constitutional crisis'

John Bercow provoked uproar at Westminster on Monday when he ruled that the Government could not bring the Prime Minister's deal back for a third "meaningful vote" unless there were substantial changes.

He said the "government can not legitimately... resubmit to the House [of Commons] the same proposition or substantially the same proposition as that of last week".

In response, a Downing Street spokesperson said, "We note the speaker's statement".

EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the EU would not grant a delay without a "concrete plan" from the United Kingdom about what they would do with it.

If in those circumstances May's deal was finally ratified, this would be pork barrel politics of epic proportions, the government's DUP tail wagging an entire nation into a Brexit destiny that even its little troop has always held in contempt.

The senior national diplomats in Brussels spoke on Monday afternoon (18 March) after the UK's speaker of parliament seemed to have dashed May's hopes for a third House of Commons vote - which had initially been expected as soon as this week - to approve her stalled divorce deal with the bloc.

Prime Minister Theresa May could also introduce some changes to the non-binding Political Declaration on the future relationship between United Kingdom and the EU.

Irish foreign minister Simon Coveney said the United Kingdom would need to provide a "very persuasive plan" to go with any requests for a delay to Brexit.

It is freaky because on one level I agree with this pompous little man when he declared that Theresa May can not keep coming back to the Commons with her lousy deal.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator added: "Extending the uncertainty without a clear plan would add to the economic cost for our businesses but could also incur a political cost for the EU".

In addition to regulating the terms of departure, May's deal promises to take Britain out of the EU single market and customs union, common fisheries and farm policies and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice at the end of a status-quo period in which new trade arrangements would be agreed.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman confirmed ministers would want to be confident they had a "realistic prospect" of success before deciding to call a third vote.

The 400-year-old principle dictates that MPs can not vote on an identical matter twice in the same parliamentary session.

Mr Bercow's ruling could make that plan impossible unless Mrs May is able to negotiate some change to her deal before presenting it once more to MPs.

"We are really exhausted by these negotiations", Roth said at a meeting with his European Union counterparts in Brussels ahead of the leaders' summit.

"I will fight to the last hour of the deadline on 29 March for an orderly exit", she told a press conference in Berlin.

"Essentially what he is trying to say is "Look what you have done has not got a majority, it has been roundly rejected twice, you need to try something else this time", she told Al Jazeera.
