Nadler said that the document requests, with responses to most due by March 18, are a way to "begin building the public record" and that the committee has the responsibility to investigate and hold public hearings.

He said the requests would be sent to officials at the White House and Justice Department, along with Trump's oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and Allen Weisselberg, the chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, the president's global business empire.

"Congress must provide a check on abuses of power", he said.

In their letter to White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, the Democratic trio warned that destruction, manipulation or withholding of such documents would be "in direct contravention of federal laws", which require that presidents and other officials preserve such materials.

He said it was too soon to consider whether impeachment should be pursued, however.

He briefly explained his intimate understanding of Kingsbury's Air Raid offense and said uniting with Kingsbury would be "nice". I just show up and do what I'm supposed to do. "Obviously generous words from him". "But that's the relationship".

The new investigation also follows an announcement by the House intelligence panel that it is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election that brought Trump to power, and Trump's foreign business interests.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has kept calls for impeachment at bay by insisting that Mr Mueller first must be allowed to finish his work, and present his findings publicly - though it's unclear whether the White House will allow its full release.

While extremely broad, Nadler's inquiry focuses on abuse of power, public corruption and obstruction of justice since Trump became president, though some of the inquiries also deal with the campaign and the presidential transition.

House Oversight Chair Elijah Cummings said last week he would like to question Weisselberg and Trump's children, as well, and the House Ways and Means Committee is reportedly planning to request Trump's past tax returns.

Nadler also said that officials who are now serving or who have previously worked in the White House and the Department of Justice for the administration will be asked to provide information to the committee.

"The House Judiciary Committee's letter has been received by the White House".

In a letter to the White House, the committee asked for information surrounding former FBI Director James Comey's termination, communications with Justice Department officials, the Trump Tower meeting and multiple other matters.

"It's very clear - 1,100 times he referred to the Mueller investigation as a witch hunt", Nadler said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" on Sunday.

The oversight panel also has given the White House until Tuesday to respond to document requests surrounding its clearance process, some of which panel Democrats have been seeking for months.
