Momo challenge: Police advise over 'freaky game'

If they do not comply, they are apparently threatened.

The orders become increasingly violent and risky, including instructions to threaten others and self-harm.

It is at this point that children are threatened that they will be cursed or their family will be hurt if they do not self-harm.

The disturbing challenges have been linked to the death of a 12-year-old girl in Argentina.

It first started as a sick WhatsApp "suicide" game, before spreading to YouTube and other social media sites.

National Online Safety - a group of online safety experts that provides advice for schools - has now issued some tips for parents to keep their kids safe from Momo.

Parent Gemma Leanne Walker, 26, of St Mary's Bay who has a nine-year-old daughter, Ella, at Dymchurch Primary, said: "I usually think things like this that circulate are nothing but with this one my daughter came to me to ask me to google it".

It also recommends parents telling children to not search for this content as it "may only cause more distress".

Anxious parents who have experienced it with their children are urging other parents to take caution.

"How many people watching this have sat down and had the talk with their children about what they're doing online, who they're communicating with what they're sharing?"

The police email added: 'Children are subsequently bombarded with terrifying images and messages reportedly ranging from threats and dares which encourage them to self-harm and even commit suicide'.

We should be talking to our children about online safety and the things they may encounter and how we have to go about our online life. Encourage your child to talk to you about anything they're unsure of and reiterate the importance of not succumbing to peer pressure. News publications reported the notorious self-harming challenge was targeting children and teenagers in North America, Asia and Europe.

However, the researchers say their results need to be treated cautiously as other factors may account for their findings. The researchers noted that around half of the men enrolled in the study had previously tried or had now used cannabis.
