76ers give up on Markelle Fultz with trade to Magic

And more importantly for the Philadelphia 76ers, he's a guard sized guard who can cover opposing guards.

Two people familiar with the negotiations say that former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz has a new home, going from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Orlando Magic.

Fultz is now sidelined while recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome, and though he's expected to play again this season, his problems extend well beyond his health.

The 76ers will receive Jonathon Simmons, a 2020 first-round pick, and a 2019 second-round pick. The first-round pick is from Oklahoma City and the second-rounder is from Cleveland, per Kevin O'Connor.

During his freshman season at the University of Washington (2016-17), Fultz played in 25 games with the Huskies, averaging 23.2 ppg., 5.9 apg., 5.7 rpg. and 1.60 stlpg.in 35.7 minpg., while shooting.413 (52-126) from three-point range. In his rookie year, he appeared in just 14 regular season games but never seemed quite healthy.

The Sixers traded up from No. 3 overall in 2017 to select Fultz. Fultz, an excellent shooter coming out of Washington (47.6 FG% / 41.3 3P% / 64.9 FT%) and one of the main reasons the Sixers moved up to get him, quickly became unable to shoot after his first summer as an National Basketball Association player. He's averaging 6.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 20.6 minutes over 41 games with the Magic this season.

Smith attempted to shift blame to the special counsel, saying "it has not been our experience that the special counsel has been forthcoming with information".

With a cap hit of $8.3 million this season and $9.7 next season, moving Fultz became necessary if the Sixers plan on trying to sign both Jimmy Butler and newly-acquired Tobias Harris this offseason.

It might be somewhat obvious at this point, but the best way to characterize Fultz's future with the team might be "wait and see".
