"Earlier today, a website published a photograph of me from my 1984 medical school yearbook in a costume that is clearly racist and offensive", Northam said in an apology statement. It's 2019, 35 years later; what Northam thought was in good taste when he was 25 says next to nothing, I think, about his beliefs and actions today, when he is 60.
When pressed by the caucus, Northam said he did not know which person he was in the photo - the person in blackface or the person in the KKK outfit.
In his statement, Northam said he recognized "that it will take time and serious effort to heal the damage this conduct has caused".
Friday evening, Gov. Northam released a 1-minute video of his apology, stating what he did was "wrong", and that he isn't that way as the people who elected him.
In a statement delivered in front of members of the media and a live television audience, Northam said he believes that neither of the people that appear in the photo is him and asks Virginians for the opportunity to "earn your forgiveness". Should Northam step down, then Democrat Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would assume the governor's office.
The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement late Friday saying "we feel complete betrayal" and are "still processing" the pictures.
"We still have a lot of issues to work on as we move forward", he said. He said the photo comes "with pain beyond what many of us can even understand".

Northam's office did not immediately return requests for comment from various news outlets such as the Washington Post and the Virginian-Pilot Friday afternoon. Virginia state Senate Democrats did the same.
Mr. Northam, speaking in Richmond, cast himself as a martyr of his times, saying he won't resign because that would be the easy way out.
