Facebook 'paid users to gather their personal data'

Facebook 'paid users to gather their personal data'

In short, Facebook allegedly abused the Apple Developer Enterprise Program that lets partner companies make corporate apps and work-related tools available to their employees outside of the consumer-facing Apple App Store.

Facebook paid users ages 13 to 35 up to $20 per month to install the iOS or Android "Facebook Research" app and use the program to sell their private information back to the social media company, TechCrunch reported Tuesday.

In a statement, an Apple spokesman told TechCrunch, "We designed our Enterprise Developer Program exclusively for the internal distribution of apps within an organization..."

"We designed our Enterprise Developer Program exclusively for the internal distribution of apps within an organization", a company representative told reporters.

But Facebook balked at some of TechCrunch's characterizations of the program.

"Key facts about this market research program are being ignored". Facebook added that less than 5 percent of the users who participated in the research were teens, who signed parental consent forms.

The terms for the app reveal that it collects your app activities and data, internet browsing history, and data from encrypted apps.

Speciically, Facebook's customers - in this case, the app users - should, according to the policy, not have access to the app at all as its use is meant for employees only "and only in conjunction with Your Internal Use Applications for the goal of developing and testing".

The fallout from the Cambridge Analytica data leak (and a seemingly unending string of privacy scandals ever since) has strained Facebook's relationships in Silicon Valley, but none is now more contentious than the social media company's intensifying conflict with Apple. Facebook is doing this program through beta testing services including Applause, BetaBound and uTest.

Dubbed "Facebook Research", participants installing the social networking giant's app received requests for high levels of access to their device which enables vast amounts of information to be collected.

As news of the activity came to light, Facebook has announced that the program (sometimes referred to as Project Atlas) is being terminated on iOS, but it seems that it will be continuing on Android. But Facebook reportedly continued to gather the same data using a different method.

As per its App Store guidelines, collecting information from other apps installed on a user's a device is something that is a clear no-no with Apple, and one can expect that Apple is set to butt heads with Facebook again.

Revoking Facebook's certificates doesn't mean any of its apps are removed from the App Store. (There's also an argument that we should be able to pay for an ad-free Facebook and other services.) But Facebook's now-canceled research program took that tradeoff to a terrifying new extreme. The strategy let Facebook bypass Apple's app approval process, which nearly certainly would have otherwise blocked Facebook's data-collecting app for violating Apple's privacy policies.

"It is inherently manipulative to offer teens money in exchange for their personal information when younger users don't have a clear understanding of how much data they're handing over and how sensitive it is", he said in a statement. It will be interesting to see how Facebook responds to this ban.
