Kamala Harris: Democrat senator announces 2020 United States presidential bid

There was never much doubt that Indian-American Kamala Harris, 54, a first-term senator and former California attorney general, would enter the U.S. presidential race as she did early Monday; the big question politicos are asking is whether she has the dexterity to pull off a win.

In the first 30 minutes after her announcement, Harris received individual online contributions from all 50 states, spokesman Ian Sams said on Twitter. "For ourselves, for our children, and for our country", Harris declares in a campaign video shared on social media and posted to her campaign website at KamalaHarris.org.

"I have the unique experience of having been a leader in local government, state government and federal government", she said in an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America".

Vowing to "bring our voices together", Harris would be the first woman to hold the presidency if she succeeds.

The daughter of immigrants - her father is from Jamaica - Harris grew up in the 1960s in the progressive hotbed of Oakland, California, proud of the struggle her parents waged for civil rights.

With other candidates coming out and apologizing for their past slights against the LGBTQ community, it's possible Harris will ultimately have something to say about that choice, especially considering how strong her record is otherwise. Her slogan will be "For the People", in a nod to Harris' roots as a prosecutor, aides said. "And consider the left's attitude toward Robert Mueller, who has used hardball prosecutorial tactics to secure criminal convictions against Mike Flynn, Paul Manafort and other associates of President Trump".

The campaign chair will be Maya Harris, the candidate's sister and a former senior adviser to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.

Students now attending Westmount High say they are excited and inspired to have an alumnus in the running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

If successful, Kamala Harris, 54, a former prosecutor, would be the first woman as well as the first person of Asian descent to hold the highest office.

In addition to Harris, Warren, Gabbard, and Gillibrand, Julián Castro, Rep. John Delaney, and Richard Ojeda have all officially announced their 2020 presidential campaigns for the Democratic Party's nomination.

Harris' announcement, made on "Good Morning America", comes following months of speculation surrounding the Democrat, a rising star in the party who was elected California's junior senator in 2016 after two terms as the state's attorney general.

Along with California, Harris would attempt to notch a series of delegate wins in the southeastern states that fall in March including Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana. Harris argued that she will campaign to all Americans - regardless of where they live or their race.

If elected, she would be the first woman and woman of colour to be the president of the United States.

Prior to becoming a senator, Harris was a deputy district attorney and Alameda County, a district attorney of San Francisco city and county, and later the attorney general of California. In 2010, she narrowly beat her Republican opponent to become California's attorney general.

Moreover, Harris has also been outspoken on the nomination of former Attorney General William Barr.
