MCG pitch rated 'average' by ICC

If India, the world's top-ranked nation, win or draw in Sydney they will clinch a first-ever series in Australia since they began touring Down Under in 1947-48.

The MCG has been spared from incurring any demerit points under the International Cricket Council's pitch ratings system, graded as an improved "average" mark for the Boxing Day Test.

On the opening day of the Test match, only two wickets fell.

It had the same rating for the pitch used for the second Test at Perth.

The broad face of Pujara's at times seemingly impassable bat, must loom large in the nightmares of Australia's bowling quartet after he achieved several more landmarks on day one of the fourth Test in Sydney on Thursday.

Fortunately, the average rating means that MCG has escaped losing the worldwide status.

As per reports, the ICC confirmed the rating on Tuesday, a marked improvement from the three demerit points that they earned after last year's drawn Ashes Test.

The match had witnessed more than 1,000 runs being scored, with just 24 wickets falling over a period of five days.

Under the ICC's pitch review system, which came into effect in January a year ago, if a pitch or outfield is rated as being substandard, that venue will be given a number of demerit points.

The pitch saw its nature change after Day two. MCG has always been a happy hunting ground for Australia.
