New York City skyline turns bright blue after transformer explosion

Residents of New York City were left with more questions than answers when a bright blue light beamed from the sky Thursday evening.

Many posted videos and photos of the night sky illuminated by a bright light.

"*Not* aliens. Blown transformer at Queens Con-Ed facility", Eric Phillips, the mayor's press secretary, tweeted, "Scattered power outages, including LGA".

Con Edison reported power outages in several Queens neighborhoods, including Astoria, Jackson Heights and Whitestone. The fire was under control as of 9:40 p.m. According to the National UFO Reporting Center, there have been 18 UFO sightings in NY in the last two months. It turned out there had been a fire at the Con Edison power plant in Queens, which led to a huge explosion and a dramatic, bright neon-blue sky. Flight tracking site FlightAware shows that no flights took off from the busy NY airport between 9:22 PM and 10:23 PM ET.

In January 2014, a transformer under Sixth Avenue in midtown blew up after being shorted out by salt and melting snow, causing some impressive (orange) flames and leading to the evacuation of a nearby building.

Another Twitter user noted that people had been warned to change their ways: "What's happening in the sky in NY?"

LaGuardia Airport has since resumed to normal operations, the FAA said in an advisory posted to its website.

All terminals were affected by the loss of commercial power, causing the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a temporary ground stop.
