Despite whatever tensions or disagreements he and Penny (or the rest of the cast) may have had on set, co-star Cindy Williams insisted to ET in 2015 that it was like "an Italian family at a dinner table on Sunday and somebody doesn't pass the celery properly".

In a statement, Marshall's family said the TV legend died peacefully at her Hollywood Hills home late Monday.

Marshall was born in the Bronx and grew up in a Grand Concourse apartment. "I missed her not being there".

'I always had a wonderful time catching up with her at events, she was always wonderful to be with. It's a handsome, touching movie that made Marshall the second woman ever to direct a film that was nominated for Best Picture.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date to be announced, according to Marshall's family. Sister Ronny Harlin became a casting director and producer. She earned raves for her comedic timing and for portraying one of the few relatable blue-collar female characters onscreen in the '70s during a time when The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie's Angels reigned supreme.

Marshall is best known for her roles in "The Odd Couple" and "Laverne and Shirley". Marshall starred in the Happy Days spin-off from 1976-1983 as the feisty half of a pair of roommates who worked on the assembly line at the Shotz Brewery in Milwaukee in the 1950s. De Niro starred in Marshall's third film "Awakening" alongside Robin Williams, nabbing the actor an Academy Award nomination for his performance. The series ran for eight seasons on ABC (the last without Williams) and even relocated its setting to Burbank, California beginning in the sixth season.
