British PM Theresa May to face leadership challenge over Brexit plan

"Every leader's made the mistake of feeding this monster, that always then turns around and gobbles them up", she said.

May must win votes from 158 Tory MPs to survive, and could not face another leadership challenge for 12 months if so.

In a statement Sir Graham said: 'The votes will be counted immediately afterwards and the result will be announced as soon as possible in the evening'.

If a so-called "meaningful vote" fails to pass the Brexit deal through the House of Commons, pressure would ramp up on May to call a general election and resign. That would mean May would stay on as "caretaker" PM while her party picks a successor.

She still has the challenge of selling her deal and not just to MPs but to party activists who are equally aggrieved that the Brexit they wanted is not what they have got. "In the national interest, she must go". "It's the right thing for the country".

Under party rules, if 15 per cent of Tory members of parliament write to the chairman of the backbench 1922 committee expressing no confidence in their party leader, then a ballot is triggered.

All 315 Tory legislators can vote on the confidence motion.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said Mrs May is "the best person to make sure we actually leave the European Union on March 29", while Home Secretary Sajid Javid said a leadership contest would be seen as "self-indulgent and wrong".

I realise that the party would like a different leader to take them into that election. "In the national interest, she must go".

Suffolk Coastal MP Therese Coffey said: "I will be supporting Theresa May to continue as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister in today's vote".

Mrs May faces a vote of confidence in her leadership after 48 of her Conservative MPs called for one to be held.

"A change of leadership in the Conservative party now will put our country's future at risk and create uncertainty when we can least afford it".

"It is clear that neither Theresa May nor a new party leader will be able to get a better deal from the EU".

May promised to seek changes to the agreement and bring it back for a vote before January 21, but the deferral has enraged many MPs who remain convinced she no longer has any credibility on Brexit.

She said a new prime minister would have to scrap or extend Article 50, the mechanism taking Britain out of the European Union on 29 March, "delaying or even stopping Brexit".

Prince Harry Meghan Markle's new home has an Indian connection
The Duchess of Sussex reportedly feels like members of the British press are targeting her unfairly, according to Vanity Fair . Sources claimed Meghan was rude to Kate's staff, and Middleton made it clear to Markle that her behavior was "unacceptable".

"If the ERG (European Research Group of MPs) ends up being strengthened we are more likely to see a no deal Brexit, which really would be a nightmare".

The Conservatives had to build a "country that works for everyone" and deliver "the Brexit people voted for".

Mrs May cleared the decks to lobby Tory MPs for their backing, cancelling a planned meeting of Cabinet and a trip to Dublin for talks with Irish premier Leo Varadkar.

Most of the county's MPs had publicly backed the PM, with the exception of Gravesham MP Adam Holloway, who had already been among MPs demanding a vote.

Quizzed on whether she might tell her colleagues at the 1922 Committee a date for her departure, the spokesman said: "I'm not aware of that, no".

'The government need to be putting the country first and providing real leadership at this time of constitutional crisis.

Hitting out at Theresa May for a lack of clarity on when the withdrawal deal would be put before the House, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "The Prime Minister's appalling behaviour needs to be held to account".

Still, he remains very popular with the party's membership: people queued for hours to see his speech at the Conservative Party Conference in October, which was widely seen as a pitch to replace May.
