Police find body in search for Grace Millane

Ms Millane, who went missing on the eve of her 22nd birthday, was last seen last Saturday night going into CityLife Hotel with a man.

Speaking at a news conference in Auckland on Friday, Grace's father, David Millane, said his daughter was "lovely" and "family-orientated".

The brother of a British backpacker allegedly murdered in New Zealand has shared a heartbreaking tribute as police confirmed they have found a body believed to be his sister.

But the Herald can reveal that the man is alleged to have murdered Grace between December 1 and 2.

CCTV image issued by Auckland City Police of Briton Grace Millane, 22, at the Sky City centre in Auckland on Saturday evening. Asked how the father was doing, Beard said, "Any father, any parent in this situation would struggle".

The announcement by police that Miss Millane was "no longer alive" followed a review of CCTV footage, the forensic examination of a hotel where she was last seen, and the discovery of a vehicle.

For days, local police had searched for Millane but new evidence changed the course from a missing person investigation to a murder case.

But he emphasised that New Zealand remained a "very safe place to visit".

"All of us hope that this is fair swift process and brings you some peace", Judge Thomas said.

Police in Auckland say they believe they have found her body on the outskirts of the city.

Police said there's no indication Millane and the 26-year-old suspect knew each other before they were spotted at the hotel, but investigators would not elaborate on how they met.

Grace Millane, 22, was last seen at the Auckland city center around 7 pm December 1.

Grace Millane's family raised the alarm when she hadn't been in contact with them for five days.

"I didn't know her personally but numerous people here do".

He said Kiwis are shocked and horrified when something like this happens which shows that New Zealand is a safe country.

Millane, from Essex in southeast England, was staying at Base Backpackers hostel during her time in Auckland.

Her passport, a pale pink Casio Baby-G watch and necklace were amongst the missing items.

Det Insp Beard added officers were "determined to do everything we can to find" Miss Millane.

Millane told journalists his much-loved daughter arrived in New Zealand on November 20 as part of a year-long, worldwide overseas experience that began earlier this year in South America.
