9 killed, dozens injured in Aleppo Chlorine attack

The groups - including the White Helmets, the Douma Coordination Committee and the Ghouta Media Center - said toxic gas inside barrel bombs dropped by helicopters over Douma caused people to suffocate and choke.

Moscow, a key Damascus ally, accused insurgents on Sunday of bombarding Aleppo with shells filled with chlorine gas, poisoning 46 people, including eight children.

After the poisonous attack, the Syrian army targeted the rebels' positions in the countryside of Aleppo, hitting the areas from which the attack on the city was initiated, according to SANA. State TV interviewed doctors in a hospital who said most people were suffering from breathing problems and blurred vision.

Rebel commanders and opposition figures discredited the government reports, denying they lobbed gas into Aleppo and accusing Damascus of seeking to undermine an existing cease-fire and efforts to kickstart political talks.

Announcing the demilitariazation agreement in September, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the creation of a 15- to 20-kilometer (approximately nine to 12 miles) demilitarized zone would prevent a "humanitarian crisis" in the northwestern province.

The Russian Defence Ministry said its fighter jets launched airstrikes on militants it held responsible for a firing shells filled with chlorine gas at the city of Aleppo.

The regime controls Aleppo city, but rebels and jihadists are present to the west in the country s last major opposition bastion of Idlib.

Rebel spokesman Mustafa Sejari dismisses the poison-gas claims.

A cease-fire in Aleppo and Idlib has been fraying in recent days. On Twitter, he accused the government of staging the attack to frame the rebels. The United States (US) launched a series of strikes on Syrian government sites in retaliation for the attack in Khan Sheikhoun.

On September 17, Turkey and Russian Federation inked the Sochi agreement; however, 37 civilians have been killed by the regime and ally attacks in Idlib de-escalation zone since then whereas scores of civilians were left injured.

Intermittent exchanges of fire have broken out in northwest Syria since the agreement between Russian Federation, a key Damascus ally, and Turkey, which backs some rebel factions.

Both sides in the Syrian conflict have accused each other of carrying out chemical attacks, which are hard to corroborate in the absence of independent monitors.
