More Republicans challenge Trump on defense of Saudi crown prince

U.S. Republican Senator Mike Lee has said he "disagrees" with President Donald Trump's dismissal of Central Intelligence Agency assessment that Saudi crown prince ordered murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) stopped short of saying Trump had given the Saudis "a pass", but acknowledged Congress should continue to examine the CIA's findings on Khashoggi's death.

As for the national reasons, the Egyptian journalists explained that: "It was not a coincidence or a slip of a tongue that US President Donald Trump indicated in his defence on the crimes of the House of Saud, especially Mohammad bin Salman, that without Saudi Arabia, Israel would have been in great trouble".

Schiff says Trump is telegraphing to despots he will have "their back" if they praise or do business with him.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman says the Central Intelligence Agency have made mistakes before and are not to be trusted.

Prince Mohammed is also due to visit other Mideast countries, where he will be warmly received by Arab leaders who have stood firmly by his side amid global outrage over Khashoggi's horrific slaying.

Ernst also said she'd "tend to be with my colleagues" in demanding congressional action against the Saudis.

Schiff previously told The Washington Post in an interview published on Friday that the House of Representatives would launch an investigation into Trump's personal financial ties to Saudi Arabia when Democrats take over the legislative body in January.

In Tunisia, however, several politicians and civil society groups have expressed their reservation over the crown prince's upcoming visit. Saudi Arabia at first denied any allegations of murder, but later admitted Khashoggi was killed by "accident".

"Making the realist case is a different thing than being so weak that we failed to tell the truth, Sasse said on "Fox News Sunday". "Strength is telling the truth even when it's hard".

On Wednesday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said that calls for the crown prince to be held accountable for Khashoggi's killing would not be tolerated.
