Pound extends rally on report British PM seals Brexit financial services deal

The Bank of England has kept its key interest rate on hold as it waits for the outcome of the stalled Brexit discussions between Britain and the European Union.

Raab had said that a Brexit deal was firmly in sight and should be agreed by that date in a week-old letter to a lawmaker that was published on Wednesday, briefly sending sterling sharply higher.

"Misleading press articles today on Brexit and financial services", Barnier commented in a message on Twitter in reaction to an announcement in the Times on the conclusion of a financial-services agreement aimed at maintaining British access to the European market after Britain's withdrawal from the EU.

However, May´s spokesman refused to repeat the date of November 21, repeating only that "we wish to conclude the deal as quickly as possible".

"I would be happy to give evidence to the Committee when a deal is finalised, and now expect 21 November to be suitable", Raab said, in response to a request to appear in front of lawmakers.

Another British official also speaking on condition of anonymity said that, while there was progress, nothing was finalised yet.

Notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger killed in prison
As they called him a coward, a rat, a punk and Satan, Bulger kept his head down and showed no emotion as he scribbled on a pad. The ex-crime boss was on the run for years and was one of the FBI's most wanted before being captured in Santa Monica in 2011.

It slipped 0.2 percent against the euro to 87.895 pence but remained near two-week highs following Thursday's huge jump. "We've put forward our proposals and the European Union are engaging with them and negotiations continue", Alison Donnelly, the prime minister's spokeswoman, added on Friday.

A deal that would give London's vast financial services hub basic access to European Union markets after Brexit is almost done, a British official said.

The EU has so far resisted calling a special summit to sign off a Brexit deal, which had been penciled in for mid-November.

The UK's Brexit negotiation team travelled to Brussels this week for technical talks with the EU.

Both sides have promised to avoid the need for customs checks but they still can't agree on how to do it.

Negotiations are deadlocked on the question of a "backstop" arrangement to guarantee that there will be no hard border in Ireland.

Notorious Boston Crime Boss Whitey Bulger Found Dead in Prison at 89
His legend only grew as Bulger evaded arrest after his disappearance, with endless reported sightings around the US and the world. Bulger also served as the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's character Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed .

Raab's visit to Warrenpoint Port was the first of any United Kingdom minister to a Northern Irish port since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Their upbeat assessment came as Arlene Foster, the leader of the DUP, which props up the Tory government and has threatened to block Theresa May's deal over the Irish border issue, also indicated a deal appeared close. Arguments over how to manage the the border between EU-member state Ireland and British-ruled Northern Ireland have threatened the talks.

And he rejected as "not sufficient or effective" Mr Raab's proposal that he could update the committee by letter until the deal was agreed.

For May, this is critical.

Raab later backs down and issues a statement insisting there is no fixed date when a deal will be done.

A decisive issue keeping sides from a Brexit deal has been London's wish to keep the border of Northern Ireland with Ireland open, preserving frictionless trade, while leaving the EU's single market and customs union to work on its own trade deals.

A second British official said that, while there was progress, nothing was finalised.
