Trump also laced into another African-American journalist, Abby Phillip of CNN, who asked the president if he wanted the new acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, to "rein in" the investigation being led by the special counsel, Robert Mueller. In particular, Shapiro says the video was sped up at the moment Acosta and the aide made contact in order to make Acosta's arm motion look more aggressive, with additional frames then inserted to restore the original timing. "She shouldn't be. You've got to treat the White House and the office of the presidency with respect".
In honor of Wednesday's episode, here's a list of some of the tenser exchanges between the White House and Acosta.
"The Canadian parliamentary press gallery opposes the arbitrary cancellation of a reporter's accreditation as an unjustifiable limit on media access to a democratically elected government and a limit on the free press", president Philippe-Vincent Foisy said in a statement. "We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern".
CNN's other White House reporters and producers have been unaffected by the action against Acosta. Jim also took home some advice from Mr. President who seemed to be in a very bad mood during session.
The president said that the bad blood between him and the media was the fault of journalists showing insufficient deference.
A 20-year veteran of the White House beat, Ryan pointed out that each president before Trump "understood that reporters were part of the underpinnings of this nation". It's a very special place.
"I think journalism in general doesn't adapt to politics", he said.
Of course, Trump has frequently sparred with white reporters, as well.
The president also warned that "others" could have their press passes revoked as well if they engaged in similar behavior. "I've traveled with him and watched him", Alexander said.
Acosta's attempts haven't come without criticism and that particular incident earned him a derisive critique from White House advisor Kellyanne Conway.
"CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them", Trump said. Trump also raised eyebrows earlier this month when he called Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who is black, "not qualified", citing "her past" and "her history" without offering specifics. While Trump initially responded when Acosta asked about denuclearization, he refused to comment when Acosta pressed him on slain college student Otto Warmbier.
Alcindor in a tweet came to Phillip's and Ryan's defense, calling Phillip "a smart, professional, and hardworking journalist".
