Australia terror attack leaves one dead, 2 injured in stabbing spree

One video showed the man repeatedly lunging at police officers with what looked to be a knife.

One person was confirmed dead after multiple stabbing incident during rush hour in the Australian city of Melbourne, police said on Friday, as the city was placed on lockdown.

As they got out of the auto, they were confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them. The man, whom police say had been on their counterterrorism radar already, set a vehicle on fire in the city to attract a response and then began swinging a knife wildly.

Ashton said the three victims, all men, and the suspect were transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Footage captured the shocking scenes as a vehicle went up in flames and police shot the knife-wielding man in the chest after he confronted officers as they arrived at the scene.

Victoria state police Commissioner Graham Ashton says the suspect, who was originally from Somalia, was known to police and the incident is being treated as terrorism.

In total, three people were stabbed and one died at the scene.

Two officers got out of the vehicle and attempted to engage him.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward.
