UFC 230: Daniel Cormier defends title, submits Derrick Lewis
Nov 04, 2018, 19:18
In a clinical performance which badly exposed the gap in class and technical ability between the two fighters, Cormier made the first defense of his heavyweight title on Saturday via second-round submission in the main event of UFC 230.
He was meeting an unlikely challenger in the form of Lewis, 33, who was appearing on consecutive main cards, having faced Russia's Alexander Volkov just four weeks ago at UFC 229 in Las Vegas, where he secured a stunning late KO win.
But that doesn't mean he won't be fighting in UFC in the future, and Daniel Cormier called The Beast out after he defeated Derrick Lewis at UFC 230.
After the fight, Joe Rogan asked Cormier what he thought about a potential showdown with 41-year-old Brock Lesnar.
One of the most genuine and honest people in sports, Cormier heaped praised upon Lewis' power, but it was never a factor. Cormier has never lost to anyone except Jones, the star-crossed former light heavyweight champion who beat him twice.
There was a decent amount of hype heading into this one but when the octagon doors closed, it became evident very quickly that the gap in skill between these two would be too vast for Lewis to conquer.
Much like Lewis attacked a bucket of chicken, Cormier got him everywhere: leg, thigh, and then the neck for the decisive blow.
"I think a lot of people have to understand that I've been doing this for nine years, and I fought at a championship level for eight of them", Cormier said in the cage after the fight.
Cormier landed another takedown and eventually sunk in a rear-naked choke, forcing Lewis to tap at the 2:14 mark.
"It's massive to me to headline the Garden", Cormier said. That dude actually got in so much s**t that they just said, "Here, DC, you can just have the belt back" the last time after he knocked me out. Whether it takes place in the Octagon or the squared circle - or both it looks like only time will tell but things could get very interesting in this situation. Three years I've been the light-heavyweight champion because this dude can't stay out of trouble. "If you have a puncher's chance, that's not enough".
