Khashoggi was strangled or suffocated and body dismembered, Turkish prosecutor says

Chief prosecutor Irfan Fidan said a meeting with his Saudi counterpart on Monday yielded "no concrete results".

The journalist was suffocated immediately after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul on October 2, the statement added, as it reiterated a request for the extradition of suspects arrested by Saudi Arabia in the case of the brutal murder. It is also pressing Saudi Arabia for information concerning the whereabouts of Khashoggi's remains, which still haven't been found.

Senate Democrats are demanding a classified briefing to find out if USA intelligence knew anything beforehand about plans by Saudi Arabia to abduct or harm a writer for The Washington Post who was killed earlier this month.

Turkey says a Saudi hit squad - including a member of the prince's entourage - travelled to Istanbul to kill the journalist and then tried to cover it up.

Two Saudi sisters found dead, tied together in NY
The women's bodies washed up along the banks of the Hudson River in Riverside Park, on the Upper West Side, Wednesday, Oct. 24. Saudi Arabia's Consulate General in NY said in a statement that it had "appointed an attorney to follow the case closely".

On Wednesday, Turkey's chief prosecutor made details of the murder public for the first time, revealing that the journalist had been strangled as soon as he entered the consulate.

"Yesterday, our prosecutor told the Saudi prosecutor that the prosecution could be carried out in Turkey since the location of the crime is Istanbul", Erdogan said at Turkey's parliament.

After vehement denials that Riyadh was involved in Khashoggi's disappearance, Saudi officials admitted Oct.19 that the dissident was killed inside the building.

Khashoggi, who had become a frequent critic of the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, was in the consulate to obtain papers for his planned marriage.

U.S. President Donald Trump on October 23 denounced Saudi handling of the death of Khashoggi, calling it the "worst cover-up ever" and "a total fiasco".

Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb, who travelled to Istanbul this week, left his hotel around 2110 GMT on Tuesday escorted by a convoy and went to the regional head offices of the Turkish Intelligence Organisation (MIT), the private DHA news agency reported.

Michelle Bachelet said she welcomed steps taken by the Turkish and Saudi government to probe his death, but given Saudi Arabia's apparent involvement in the slaying, "the bar must be set very high".

Saudi Arabia's foreign minister appeared to reject that notion in remarks on Saturday, saying the kingdom would try the perpetrators and bring them to justice after the investigation is completed.
