Notorious Boston gangster Whitey Bulger killed in prison

The U.S. Bureau of Prison said Bulger "was fond unresponsive" at 8:20 a.m. and that emergency life-saving measures by prison staff were unsuccessful.

The Associated Press reports that the 89-year-old was at the high-security penitentiary USP Hazelton in West Virginia.

Bureau of Prisons officials and his attorney declined last week to comment on why he was being moved.

"Hopefully the seven years he spent in prison, as well as his recent death, brings some closure to the families of his many victims", Brian Kelly, who was a former federal prosecutor who tried Bulger, told CNN. At his ensuing trial, he was convicted of 11 murders in three states.

His legend only grew as Bulger evaded arrest after his disappearance, with endless reported sightings around the US and the world. Bulger also served as the inspiration for Jack Nicholson's character Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed .

The ex-crime boss was on the run for years and was one of the FBI's most wanted before being captured in Santa Monica in 2011.

A lawyer who represented Bulger blamed the gangster's death on decisions made by the Bureau of Prisons.

His legend only grew as Bulger evaded arrest after his disappearance, with endless reported sightings around the USA and the world. It's unclear if authorities have determined who played a role in the murder.

In one of those heartfelt letters, Bulger wrote: 'My 16 years on the run were the happiest years of my life and hers.

But FBI and other investigators had been responding to a US Postal facility in DE that morning, FBI spokesman Dave Fitz said. Thomas Antonetti told CNN that the package was received at 375 Greenwich Street and that the bomb squad is on the scene.

"Bulger embarked upon a life of crime at the age of 14 and had become a prominent figure in Boston's organized crime scene by the late 1970s".

Greig is still serving her sentence at a federal prison in Minnesota.
