Khashoggi's killing threatens Trump dreams for Mideast peace

This surveillance footage is another piece of evidence in the mysterious case of what happened to Khashoggi after he entered the consulate nearly three weeks ago.

After being pressured by Western governments, Saudi Arabia issued a communiqué on Sunday, 21st of October, giving further details about the killing of Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabian officials do not know details of how dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in their consulate in Istanbul or where his body is, Saudi foreign minister Adel al-Jubeir said on Sunday. But some of his comments appeared to contradict previous statements from Riyadh, marking yet another shift in the official story.

Erdogan spoke after Saudi Arabia, in a statement early Saturday, finally acknowledged that 59-year-old Khashoggi had died in the consulate, though its explanation that he was killed in a "fistfight" was met with global skepticism and allegations of a cover-up created to absolve Prince Mohammed of direct responsibility.

"The more one thinks about it, the more it feels like our intelligence is being mocked", he wrote.

The men were supposed to inspect a mysterious 2-millimeter hole found in the hull of a Soyuz module, docked at the space station. They were to join three of their colleagues at the International Space Station and to deliver supplies to the orbiting outpost.

President Donald Trump earlier said he was "not satisfied" with the account and Turkey's president yesterday vowed to reveal the truth about the death.

Now, the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the hands of Saudi agents may put the plan into a deep freeze.

Turkish government sources have claimed that Mr Khashoggi was tortured and murdered by a hit squad flown in from Riyadh.

CNN aired the footage on Monday, citing a Turkish official as describing the man as a "body double" and a member of a 15-man Saudi team sent to Istanbul to target the writer.

But he continued to defend the nation as an "incredible ally" and allowed for the possibility that Khashoggi's death was not directly ordered by Crown Prince Mohammed.

Mr Johnson said "we can not just let it pass" and, while the United Kingdom has crucial trade and security links with the Gulf state, "the United Kingdom and the U.S. must lead other countries in holding Saudi Arabia properly to account". That contradicted the public prosecutor's statement a day earlier that Khashoggi died after a fistfight with people who met him inside the consulate.

Trump, Kushner and other administration officials say it is important for Washington to maintain relations with Saudi Arabia, especially as it seeks to squeeze Iran and salvage a stalled Middle East peace process.

Last week, a leaked photo apparently taken from surveillance footage showed Mutreb at the consulate, just ahead of Khashoggi's arrival.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he would make all necessary statements about the killing of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a meeting with members of his ruling AK Party in parliament on Tuesday (local time).
