Rae Carruth is a free man. Carruth was seen being escorted out of the Sampson Correctional Facility in North Carolina, while an SUV was waiting to take him away.

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth was released from prison on Monday after almost 20 years in jail. Adams was shot four times while driving her vehicle, but she managed to make a 911 call that helped implicate Carruth in the scheme.

The former Carolina Panthers wide receiver, ex-girlfriend, Cherica Adams, was seven months pregnant with Carruth's son on November 16, 1999 when she was shot while driving in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was sentenced to 18-24 years in prison.

"I'm excited about just being out of here", Carruth told CNN affiliate WSOC days before his release after almost 18 years in prison.

The child, Chancellor Lee Adams, was born with severe cerebral palsy due to trauma from the shooting.

Carruth has never admitted guilt in Adams' murder, but in a complex 15-page letter to CBS affiliate WBTV in Charlotte in February he wrote that "I feel responsible for everything that happened". "Ms. Adams should not be doing this and I want that responsibility back".

Carruth has repeatedly said he wants to have a relationship with his son, who remains in the custody of his grandmother, Saundra Adams, who has raised him since birth.

Watkins, who fired the fatal shots, plead guilty to second-degree murder and will serve a minimum of 40 years in prison.

"I've forgiven Rae already, but to have any type of relationship with him, there does have to be some repentance", Adams said to the Charlotte Observer.
