Trump Threatens To Send Military, Shut Border As Migrants Head For Mexico

President Donald Trump threatened to deploy the military and close the southern US border on Thursday if Mexico did not move to halt large groups of migrants headed for the United States from Central America.
Trump labeled some of the migrants as "criminals", and said he would resort to "stopping all payments" to Central American countries if Mexico did not "stop this onslaught" on the U.S.
The issue with Trump's threat is that deploying active US military troops for domestic law enforcement duties is illegal, unless he declares a national emergency and is granted a waiver by Congress. In April, thousands of National Guard troops were deployed to the southern border to assist with security operations there, although their assistance was limited to surveillance work.
Immigrants fleeing violence or other threats who seek refugee status to stay in Mexico will have to request it at the border and wait up to 45 days in immigration detention, the government said in a statement Wednesday. The rest want to reach the USA like him.
But at least five U.S. states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a since-abandoned White House policy to separate migrant children from their parents at the border.
