MDH: 7th Minnesota case of AFM 'under review' by CDC

Federal health officials released the updated numbers on Tuesday, and said they still had no idea what was causing the spike in AFM cases or why kids were getting it in the first place.

"We understand that people particularly parents are concerned", Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a here media briefing on Tuesday.

Still, because this is a "pretty dramatic disease", Messonnier said health officials want to raise awareness about the symptoms to make sure parents seek medical care immediately if their children show a sudden onset of weakness or loss of muscle tone in their arms and legs.

Archbishop of Washington DC Cardinal Donald Wuerl resigns amid cover-up scandal
For his part, Bishop Wuerl was sent back to his native Pittsburgh, where he was installed as the diocesan bishop in March 1988. The pope also praised Cardinal Wuerl's "nobility" in choosing to step down rather than defend his record under fire.

Federal health officials are anxious about an increase in a mysterious and rare condition that mostly affects children and can paralyze arms and legs, with 127 confirmed or suspected cases reported as of Tuesday. The cases stretch across 22 states, and most of the patients are children under the age of 18-years-old. However, the illness has been on the rise in the US since 2014. Those officials are probing another 65 illnesses in those states.

"When these illnesses occur, it often means that the spread of the virus, the transmission of the virus, in the community is quite widespread and there probably are many persons, many children, affected just like when the flu comes to the community", Modlin said.

Other countries have reported AFM cases, but not the same seasonal pattern the United States has experienced.

Google pulls out of competition for $10B Pentagon cloud contract
The Pentagon already offers "dozens" of individual clouds, many of them built in secret to enable classified military programs. The Defense Department has made the case that using more than one provider would add needless complexity.

Messonnier said the CDC has definitively ruled out polio - which causes a similar set of symptoms - as the cause.

Some possible causes being investigated by the CDC include enteroviruses, which affect the digestive system, and rhinoviruses - the infectious agents associated with the common cold. There was one death of a child who had AFM, in 2017, said Messonnier. The CDC doesn't know what caused the spikes.

"Any weakness, including trouble swallowing, weakness of an extremity, especially in a child who has recently gone through signs of an infection, those would be the main red flags", said Sarah Hopkins. There were 120 confirmed cases in 2014 and 149 two years later.

GOP Sen. Jeff Flake criticizes Trump's 'appalling' mockery of Christine Blasey Ford
In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Trump did not back away from his rally comments, instead attacking Kavanaugh's Democratic critics. I don't think that would happen with Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seated across the table.

Besides viruses, officials are also considering environmental toxins as a possible cause, but so far, they have no evidence that a particular toxin is behind the cases. Also, she said there can be lags in reporting because of the time it takes to review a patient's clinical syndrome and radiographic findings. CNN found 47 confirmed cases and 49 more that were suspected or being investigated, for a total of 96 cases in 30 states in 2018.
