Saudi vows to 'hit back' at sanctions over Khashoggi

He said any response to Khashoggi's killing "needs to be strong, not symbolic", including the possibility of cutting off USA weapons sales to Riyadh, or it would undermine the U.S.'s moral standing in the world. Saudi Arabia has denied that. Sam Altman, president of start-up investment firm Y Combinator, said last week he was suspending involvement with NEOM's advisory board "until the facts regarding Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance are known".

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor, vanished after entering the consulate on October 2 to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage.

What did the Europeans say?

"If Khashoggi had disappeared in Turkey when he was at a hotel or a private residence, I think there is plausible deniability on the part of the Saudi government", Brennan told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Later Mr Hunt said that whatever happened now was "absolutely up to Saudi Arabia".

"The country that can help us get to the bottom of this is Saudi Arabia", he said. That is what the world wants to know.

Saudi Arabia Sunday warned against threats to punish it over last week's disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as European and USA allies piled on pressure.

Mr Trump indicated earlier this week he was reluctant to pull out of a multi-billion-dollar United States weapons deal with the Saudis to show White House anger if the missing journalist was killed by the Saudis. Most worldwide media partners have pulled their sponsorships.

"The Kingdom affirms its total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it, whether by threatening to impose economic sanctions, using political pressures, or repeating false accusations that will not undermine the Kingdom and its staunch positions and Arab, Islamic and global status, the outcome of these weak endeavours, like their predecessors, is a demise", the country's press agency said, citing an "official source".

"The kingdom also affirms that it will respond to any action with a bigger one". Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday for his support for forming a joint working group to probe the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

In two sessions it lost $50bn (£38bn) of its $450bn capitalisation, AFP news agency reported.

It later clawed back some losses to close down 3.5 per cent at 7,266.59 points.

Riyadh on Saturday dismissed accusations that authorities there had ordered Khashoggi be murdered by a hit squad inside its Istanbul consulate as "lies and baseless allegations".

Turkish investigative agencies, according to media reports, claim that they have audio and video evidence which indicated that the journalist was brutally killed inside the consulate.
