Diego Maradona slams Lionel Messi in freakish rant

Football legend, Diego Maradona has accused his fellow compatriot Lionel Messi of not being a natural leader for Argentina and has urged his country to stop treating the Barcelona icon as a "God".

In a questionable state during an interview with Fox Sports Mexico's "La Ultima Palabra", Diego Armando Maradona heavily criticized Lionel Messi as well as giving other freaky comments, which at times seemed worrying.

Speaking to FOX Sports, Maradona said, "We shouldn't deify Messi any longer".

Diego Maradona is no stranger to controversy.

Maradona, who led Argentina to victory in 1986, said Messi, who was again unable to emulate that feat in Russian Federation this summer was expected to be "the saviour of the fatherland". He's the best in the world with Cristiano [Ronaldo].

The Cityzens are level on points with Chelsea and Liverpool but their goal differential is better than the other two. We deserved to win, but sometimes it's important not to lose, as well'.

Maradona and Messi worked together during the former's ill-fated stint as coach of the Argentine national team between 2008 and 2010.

"You have to take the leadership away for him to be the Messi we want him to be", Maradona said.

Diego Maradona lampooned Lionel Messi for using "the bathroom 20 times before a game" and suggested the Argentina star stay in the global wilderness.

The closest semblance of success that Messi has achieved with his national team was in 2014 when he led the side to the finals of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil where they lost to Germany.

"We also had the best player in the world".

Guardiola defined Messi as "a competitive animal, fierce" and said that he "hates losing", all of which were key components to his success at Barcelona.

"I wouldn't call Messi but never say never".

Barcelona have reportedly started to plan a new contract for forward Lionel Messi.

The comments are sure to hurt Messi, but when he takes one glance at his trophy cabinet we'll sure he'll forget Maradona's unexpected outburst in no time.
