Google Shuts Down Google+ After Privacy Breach

Google is closing its troubled Google Plus social network following the discovery of a software glitch this past spring that may have exposed user information of up to 500,000 customers between 20015 and 2018, the company said Monday.

The profile data that was exposed included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile photos, places lived, occupation and relationship status; it didn't include phone numbers, email messages, timeline posts, direct messages or any other type of communication data.

A memo, prepared by Google's legal and policy staff and shared with senior executives, warned that disclosing the incident would likely trigger "immediate regulatory interest" and invite comparisons to Facebook's leak of user information to data firm Cambridge Analytica, the WSJ report said.

The Wall Street Journal separately reported Monday that Google executives delayed announcing problems with Google+ because of concerns about its reputation and the danger of sparking new pushes for regulation.

Google said it hasn't yet found any evidence that the data obtained as a result of the bug was misused.

"None of these thresholds were met here", they said. In the aftermath of what appears to have been a major security flaw within Google+, the company ended up not disclosing the breach of information to its users.

"Had this breach occurred just a few months later, Google could be subject to strict GDPR fines for not keeping user data safe". Well, these plans even include permanently shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+.

"We discovered and immediately patched this bug in March 2018", Ben Smith, the company's vice president of engineering, wrote.

While Google has faced scrutiny in recent months for allowing third-party apps to access and share data from Gmail accounts, much of the privacy uproar hitting the tech industry has focused on Facebook. By doing this, it hopes to make users of Google's apps confident that their data is secure.

"Underlining this, as part of our Project Strobe audit, we discovered a bug in one of the Google+ People APIs", Google said in its announcement.

But the company kept it open long enough to cause an embarrassing privacy gaffe that could give Congress an excuse to enact tighter controls on data collection.

Google said up to 438 external applications, such as online games or quizzes, could have exploited the flaw.
