Lexus ES gets side cameras in Japan

In 2016, technology supplier Ichikoh Industries forecasted that by 2023, 29 percent of the Japanese market would have cameras and monitors in place of regular mirrors, about 2.3 million vehicles. The camera pods are also shaped to resist the accumulation of raindrops, according to Lexus.

Essentially, the side mirrors are cameras, and the live feed is displayed on left and right screens inside the cabin.

Lexus is dropping traditional side mirrors for sleek digital cameras in what it calls an industry-first move to improve safety, visibility and cabin solitude. The cameras even automatically adjust their field of focus when a turn signal is activated, or the vehicle is put into reverse.

Lexus has announced that when the new ES goes on sale in later October it will have a world's first integrated.

Then there are the displays: A pair of 5-inch monitors are attached to the front pillars.

We're surprised it's taken this long for manufacturers to catch on, but Lexus is finally offering digital wing mirrors as an option for the upcoming ES replacement model. View areas around the auto can be enhanced manually to give the driver complete peripheral awareness. In addition to providing an expanded view and better visibility at night and in poor weather, these digital systems can help yield better fuel efficiency due to the more aerodynamic design of the camera setup. And as the cameras cause less drag than mirrors, there's less annoying wind noise too.
