Hurricane Florence approaches east U.S., set to become ‘extremely dangerous’ storm

"Florence is forecast to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by Monday, and is expected to remain an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday", the NHC said in an advisory issued at 9:00 pm (local time) Sunday.

Isaac became the fifth hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic Season and the third storm being actively tracked in a busy weather weekend. North Carolina seems to be the state that could bear the brunt of the winds, along with SC and parts of southern Virginia. Hurricane Florence, according to meteorologists, could be the most powerful storm to hit the Carolinas in three decades!

Where is the hurricane now?

It was centered about 1,240 miles (2,000 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving west at 13 mph (20 kph). Hurricane Florence has been upgraded to a major category 4 hurricane as of noon on Monday.

Forecasters said Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic, between Bermuda and the Bahamas, Tuesday and Wednesday - and approach the Carolina coast Thursday.

The US National Hurricane Centre said a weather system is brewing about 175 miles east-southeast of Marathon in the Florida Keys. The area from Navarre to the Alabama-Mississippi border should experience tides of 2-4 feet above normal.

In coastal Charleston, South Carolina, city officials offered sandbags to residents.

Camp Lejeune has an extensive beachfront about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and it's well within the National Hurricane Center's forecast "cone".

NHC director Ken Graham, says that Hurricane Florence is likely to slow down as it approaches the Carolinas - which could have devastating consequences for residents, reported the Independent.
