In dramatic course change, Obama comes out swinging against Trump

Former President Barack Obama spit hot fire Friday at the University of IL to encourage all you young people (and everyone else, basically) out there to get your behinds to the voting booths in November to stop whatever is going on in Washington and bring some sanity back to democracy.

Former President Obama on Friday delivered a blistering criticism of the political tactics of his successor President Trump, saying he had built on the fears of the powerful as they look to diminishing importance in a rapidly changing nation.

Mr Obama acknowledged his sharp critique of Trump was something of a departure from tradition, noting the history of former presidents avoiding the rough and tumble of politics.

Mr. Obama took aim at the president in a speech at the University of IL, telling students that this is the most important election of his lifetime and urging them to vote against the powerful and privileged that are trying to divide Americans and make them cynical of the government in order protect the status quo.

Former President Barack Obama says President Donald Trump is "a symptom, not a cause" of what's dividing the country. "A fear, an anger that is rooted in our past but is also borne in our enormous upheavals that have taken place in your brief lifetimes".

But, Obama added, when there is a vacuum in democracy, "other voices fill the void".

"In two months we have the chance to restore some semblance of sanity to our politics", Obama said.

"We thought it was important to find a setting where President Obama can make a cogent argument outside of the candidate-specific stump speeches coming this fall", Schultz said in an email.

"When you hear how great the economy's doing right now, let's just remember when this recovery started", he said.

Former President Barack Obama is stepping into the midterm battle.

The speech marked the beginning of what will be a busy next few months for Obama as he travels from state to state campaigning for various Democrats in the run-up to the midterm elections in November.

"With the House in Democrat hands, they won't be able to repeal the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but they will be able to guarantee that no more pro-growth, pro-worker legislation will be enacted".

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Steve Stivers said Friday that Obama's campaign events will help Republicans.

"I'm here today because this is one of those pivotal moments when every one of us as citizens of the United States need to determine just who we are, what it is that we stand for", Obama said. He said it immediately after a description of the Republican Party's party-wide agenda of making voting more hard for marginalized constituencies, rejecting science, or encouraging the Benghazi-birtherism mania that flourished under his watch.

The CEO of Civic Advisors and the CEO of the "When We All Vote" initiative is the same person -- Kyle Lierman, who worked in the Obama White House for then Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett.

And Obama went on from there, calling Trump out over "cozying up to Putin", for not standing up to "Nazi sympathizers", for attacking the press, for directing his own Justice Department to show political deference, and for costing us "honesty and decency and lawfulness in our government". Saying that Nazis are bad?

This Downstate Illinois turf is familiar to Obama from his 2004 Senate race and his 2008 and 2012 presidential runs.

He also criticized Trump's response to the violence a year ago at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted in the death of one person.
