Strengthening Gordon has sight set on MS landfall this evening

Gordon made landfall Tuesday night near the Alabama-Mississippi border packing strong winds, torrential rain and flash flooding.

Gordon was located about 26 miles southeast of Jackson, Mississippi, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.

A child was killed Tuesday in Pensacola, Florida as Gordon whipped the Alabama and western Florida Panhandle coasts with tropical storm-force winds and heavy downpours, a spokeswoman with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said.

Louisiana and Mississippi's governors declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

A tornado or two is possible today and tonight over MS and western Alabama.

Gulfport was providing sand and bags to residents, and Kenny Macdonald was filling them up for himself and older residents. Officials haven't released the child's identity.

He also says they're only prepping about half the amount of food they normally do in case of power outages or slow business. It brought with it heavy rains and sustained winds of 70 miles per hour, just shy of hurricane strength. By Saturday, what's left of the storm was forecast to hook to the north, then northeast on a path toward the Great Lakes.

200 members of the National Guard were readied in Louisiana to prepare for the storm, which ended up mostly staying away from the state but still caused inundation through storm surges.

Tropical storm Gordon started as a tropical depression in the Caribbean on Sunday, becoming a tropical storm Monday near the Florida Keys, according to Clark.

Storm Lane South of Hawaii Strengthens Into Major Hurricane
On Wednesday morning, a hurricane warning was issued for Maui County, while a hurricane watch was issued for Kauai County. Hurricane Lane has weakened as it approaches Hawaii but was still expected to pack a wallop, forecasters said Wednesday.

Additional systems are possible over the next one to two weeks as we are now in the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. "Now is the time to get your plans all set".
