Hatch questions Kavanaugh about loyalty to Trump in Supreme Court confirmation hearing

U.S. Senate Democrats on Tuesday complained about Republicans blocking access to documents stemming from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's previous work in the White House under President George W. Bush as the conservative judge's Senate confirmation hearing began.

"I've been very interested in your thinking on assault weapons", Feinstein told Kavanaugh.

TRT World's North America Correspondent Jon Brain reports from Washington. But he refused to provide direct answers to Democrats who wanted him to say whether there are limits on a president's power to issue pardons, including to himself or in exchange for a bribe.

The Senate can not fulfill its constitutional duty if the White House withholds documents necessary for Senators to know whether a nominee has been truthful in testimony before the Committee. She promised to follow up, amid Republican complaints that she was being unfair. Mike Lee, R-Utah, was on the clock.

Committees are limited to meeting for a total of two hours each day the Senate is in session unless unanimous consent is granted on the floor, which it nearly always is. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) basically accused Kavanaugh of lying at his 2006 judicial confirmation hearing when he denied being involved in discussions related to the detention of enemy combatants.

The actor was protesting during Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's hearing. "I understand the importance of the issue".

Pressed by Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, Kavanaugh defended a ruling he took part in issuing an order preventing a 17-year-old illegal immigrant detained by United States authorities in Texas from immediately having an abortion.

Kavanaugh said victims of sexual harassment need better information about how to come forward.

But Kavanaugh sidestepped a question by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein about whether a sitting president can "be required to respond to a subpoena", a query that could come into play as Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigates potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Hatch explored Kavanaugh's relationship with former 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski, who Kavanaugh clerked for in 1991.

President Donald Trump speaks with Brett Kavanaugh and family.

"Not only is the country deeply divided politically, we also find ourselves with a president who faces his own serious problems", she said referring to investigations surrounding Trump. Kavanaugh argued that the detained 17-year-old needed to be transferred to an "immigration sponsor" before being immediately allowed an abortion. The demonstrators fear that Kavanaugh's confirmation would shift the Supreme Court's balance for years on issues like abortion rights, LGBT freedoms and gun control.

"Last year you drafted a dissent in Garza v. Hargan", committee member Sen. "I'm deciding whether the policy is consistent with Supreme Court precedent".

In past comments, Kavanaugh has supported an expansion of presidential immunity from prosecution - a dramatic shift from his recommendation for strong action against then-president Bill Clinton when Kavanaugh assisted in a 1990s investigation against him.

Several of his remarks appeared aimed at assuaging Democratic concerns.

According to Fox News, the hearing was interrupted 63 times before the group recessed for lunch and interruptions prolonged the commencement of the hearing by an hour and 15 minutes.

Republican Senator John Cornyn branded the chaos "mob rule". But it probably won't be enough to stop Kavanaugh's confirmation.

He also stressed that while he ultimately sided with the Trump administration, he also "made clear [the transfer to a sponsor] had to happen very quickly", and "specifically said the government can not use this as a ruse to somehow prevent the abortion" entirely.
