Trump signs defence policy bill with softened China measures

The US president signed the $716bn defence policy bill authorising military spending at the US army's Fort Drum base in upstate NY on Monday.

President Donald Trump on Monday signed a $716 billion defense policy bill that weakened efforts to punish Chinese telecom giant ZTE for violating trade laws. Increasing the size of the military is an idea that many Republicans say took a step backward after years of budget caps during the Obama administration.

Trump was greeted when he arrived at Fort Drum by Vice President Mike Pence, who arrived at the Army post about 30 minutes before the president.

Trump said those provisions undermine the president's role "as the sole representative of the nation in foreign affairs".

In May, a West Wing aide dismissed McCain's negative opinion on Trump's Central Intelligence Agency nominee during a closed-door meeting by saying of the senator that "he's dying anyway". That's likely to do with the rocky relationship the senator and the president have with one another - Trump has, in fact, disrespectfully mocked McCain during campaign rallies, even as the senator is dying from an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Yes, we're sure Cadet Bone-Spurs is a bigly part of the military spending calculations.

To curb the impacts, the USA government will providing funding to allow businesses to pay for the technology they must replace. John McCain, but Trump did not mention the senator's name during his speech.

As warned by members of his own administration, Trump's decision to act in bad faith toward the U.S.' North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally could backfire, as Turkey holds a valuable stake in the production of the F-35 jets.

"I'm so proud of myself", Trump said.

While U.S. President Donald Trump has made a decision to delay delivery of F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets to Turkey, it is well worth remembering that Turkish firm Ayesaş is the sole supplier of two major components of the Lockheed Martin aircraft.

It remains to be seen whether the president will make any remarks about Rep. Chris Collins, the Western New York Republican who was the first member of Congress to back Trump.

Fort Drum is the largest single-site employer in NY state, and its 10th Mountain Division has been the most deployed unit in the Army since 2001.
