Saudi Arabia appears to threaten Canada in Tweet

Saudi Arabia is pulling thousands of Saudi students out of Canada in retaliation after a Canadian official criticized the country's human rights record.

Saudi Arabia operates at least two routes to the country, both of which depart from Toronto.

The photo was posted after tensions between Saudi Arabia and Canada erupted this week over the the Trudeau government's call to release jailed Saudi women's rights activists.

In response, Saudi Arabia - which has received $89 billion in arms from the United States in the past decade - expelled the Canadian ambassador and vowed to shut down all trade with the largest English-speaking country on earth.

"Canada will always stand up for the protection of human rights, including women's rights and freedom of expression around the world", she said.

Canada has said it is "gravely concerned" about the arrests and has called for those detained to be released immediately.

Canada says it does not know what will happen to a $13 billion defense contract to sell Canadian-made General Dynamics Corp armored vehicles to Saudi Arabia.

The image reminded many social media users of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, in which planes were deliberately flown into the World Trade Center towers in NY and the Pentagon.

"When it comes to the broader relationship with Saudi Arabia, our diplomats have asked procedural questions today and we're waiting for answers on how Saudi Arabia intends to go forward with the relationship", she said in Vancouver.

Riyadh said that amounted to "a blatant interference in the Kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic global norms and all worldwide protocols".

Saul Rodriguez confirmed the incident in an interview Sunday with The Washington Post, but he said it happened on July 29, 2016. It wasn't from his work in movies like Pulp Fiction , but rather as a parent whose son also played basketball, Rhames said.

Analysts say the dispute between Riyadh and Ottawa shows Saudi Arabia won't accept any outside criticism and will continue flexing its muscles overseas, especially as the kingdom enjoys a closer relationship with President Donald Trump.

Saint Mary's University estimated there are about 100 students from Saudi Arabia studying at their campus while there were 80 at Mount Saint Vincent during the winter semester.

One well placed source said the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - which stresses the importance of human rights - planned to reach out to the United Arab Emirates.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland stood by Canada's position on Monday, saying Canadians expect their government's foreign policy to be guided by their values.

"It would be a shame for those students if they are deprived of the opportunity to study here", Freeland told reporters.
