NASA announces crew for first commercial space flights

NASA was established by the federal government during the Cold War to project American prestige and beat the Soviets, all in the name of space science.

NASA has always been working on its commercial crew programme, helping to accelerate private companies' spaceflight capabilities while it focuses its own efforts on other space exploration projects, such as the Space Launch System slated to launch in 2020. "Today's announcement advances our great American vision and strengthens the nation's leadership in space".

Crewed test flights of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon are targeted to launch in 2019.

Boeing's first crewed Starliner test flight will be flown by NASA astronauts Eric Boe and Nicole Aunapu Mann and Boeing astronaut Chris Ferguson in mid-2019. He flew on Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2008 with fellow Georgia Tech graduates Sandy Magnus and Shane Kimbrough.

Of the 9 astronauts tapped to serve as crew members, all but 3 are space flight veterans.

"For the first time since 2011, we are on the brink of launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil", Jim Bridenstine, NASA administrator, said.

The Commercial Crew program, on the whole, has experienced numerous delays and budget shortfalls as Boeing and SpaceX work to bring crewed launches back to the U.S. "To meet NASA's requirements, the commercial providers must demonstrate that their systems are ready to begin regular flights to the space station".

Boeing's CST-100 Starliner, on the other hand, will likely perform two crucial test flights next year, instead of this year as planned. He was selected as an astronaut in 2013.

In this illustration, a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft approaches the International Space Station for docking. He made 400 carrier landings and flew 24 combat missions. At the time, test flights were expected to be just around the corner, and the agency pledged to be rid of Russian reliance in 2017.

Williams said in Friday's interview that the new mission was "a test pilot's dream".

Josh Cassada: Coming to NASA after a career as a test pilot in the Navy, Cassada was chosen as an astronaut in 2013.

Stage victor Dumoulin said: "It's an incredible day". "It's just to wait for somebody to make a mistake". "Now, up here, being in the yellow jersey in front of all of you (the crowd) is just. wow".

Michael Hopkins was born in Lebanon, Missouri, and grew up on a farm near Richland, Missouri.

Williams has already taken two trips to the space station, commanded it, and racked up 322 days in space, second on the all-time list for female astronauts. He is a colonel in the Air Force, where he was a flight test engineer before being selected as a NASA astronaut in 2009.

By handing off crew and cargo runs to the space station - which will keep orbiting until at least 2024 - NASA has set its sight on the moon and Mars, developing the Orion capsule and the massive Space Launch System rocket.

NASA seems confident these dates will hold, and that the commercial crew program is finally on the home stretch.

Boeing's and SpaceX's commercial spacecraft may also open the space station - and more broadly, Earth orbit - to more privately-funded visitors and spaceflight participants from countries that do not have their own domestic crewed spacecraft and rockets.
