Sony Unveils World's First 48MP Smartphone Camera Sensor
Jul 25, 2018, 01:05
According to the Sony website, the new sensor is called IMX586 stacked CMOS image and is now the world's first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8μm. Moreover, this new sensor is made specifically for smartphone cameras! World's first 0.8 μm ultra-compact pixel size enables industry's highest pixel count at 48 effective megapixels Generally, miniaturization of pixels results in poor light collecting efficiency per pixel, accompanied by a drop in sensitivity and volume of saturation signal. With each pixel measuring 0.8 micrometers, the sensor measure only 8 mm, just large enough for a 1/2-inch type sensor.
It believes the new complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) IMX586 sensor, capable of delivering an image resolution of 8000 x 6000, will achieve that.
Sony says this allows even scenes with both bright and dark areas can be captured with minimal highlight blowout or loss of detail in shadows. In terms of performance, Sony's IMX586 image sensor rivals that of the high-performance SLR cameras and allows users to capture state-of-the-art, high-res pictures with a smartphone. By using the signals of the 4 adjacent pixels, the IMX586 sensor has a light sensitivity of a 12MP camera while retaining the pixel density of its 48MP image. The Sony IMX586 48-megapixel sensor is expected to arrive in future smartphones soon for better daylight photos that render great detail.
You see, Sony has filtered the IMX586 with 2x2 arrays of red, blue, and green pixels, rather than the traditional Bayer array of one red, one blue, and two green color filters per 2x2-pixel sub-array. In bright light, the built-in signal processing does an array conversion to yield an effective 48 MP image.
The company plans to start shipping samples this September, each unit costing ¥3,000 (approximately US$27, RM110).
Finally, Sony says that this sensor is better placed for HDR capture because it has a four times great dynamic range than other sensors.
