In Brussels, Trump Attacks Germany & NATO Secretary

US President Donald Trump has told NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that Germany is "captive" to Russian Federation because it is importing energy from there.

In addition to accusing Germany of being "captive" to Russia, Trump also repeated falsehoods about America's contributions to NATO's budget and slammed America's allies for not devoting a large enough swath of their economies to military spending.

In 2014, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members had pledged to commit two percent of their Gross Domestic Product for defence, with Trump repeatedly having deplored their failure to do so.

"I'm not happy about Crimea", the US president said. Trump responded, using Germany as an example. Stoltenberg stressed that progress has been made and pledged further progress in the near future. "I'm glad that the President is talking to Vladimir Putin". "This is an investment in common American and European defense and security, which can't be said with confidence about Russian or Chinese spending". "And the former Chancellor of Germany is the head of the pipeline company that is supplying the gas". He asked Stoltenberg to explain why Berlin was getting energy from Moscow, and asserted that Germany was "totally controlled" by and "captive to Russia" over a pipeline project. "I think these countries have to step it up, not over a 10-year period, but immediately".

"Long before I got here, President Obama allowed that to happen". "I'm very glad that today we are united in freedom, the Federal Republic of Germany". He told reporters in Washington before leaving that "Frankly, it helps them a lot more than it helps us", and then later tweeted from Air Force One that he may demand reimbursements from the European member nations.

"Explain that", Trump said. So I think that's inappropriate also'.

"Germany is a captive of Russian Federation".

A private family ceremony will probably follow soon, she said, adding: "He would want as little fuss as possible". Brash and opinionated, he had spoken openly about his use of drugs and addiction to heroin earlier in his life.

Berlin has been supportive of building a second pipeline to transport Russian gas straight to Germany through the Baltic Sea, despite objections from other European Union countries that the pipeline would increase the bloc's dependence on Russian energy.
