Kane's dramatic stoppage-time goal gives England win over Tunisia

England were made to work hard by Tunisia in their World Cup opener but a late Harry Kane victor ensured they got off to a winning start.

Southgate's England team start their World Cup campaign on Monday against Tunisia in Volgograd.

England's start was brilliant and they threatened to blow away Tunisia with fast-paced football which created several chances.

And England will have delighted Southgate with how they battled through dark periods in the second half - when the fire of their first half had been largely extinguished by an increasingly stubborn Tunisia - to grind out the win.

Denmark missed the World Cup in 2014, but punched a ticket for the 2018 event after a 5-1 win over the Republic of Ireland. The Barcelona goalkeeper has overcome a shaky start to his worldwide career and helped Germany win the Confederations Cup.

Kane had another appeal for a penalty waved away within five minutes of the restart as he was impeded by a pair of Tunisia players at a corner, but the rate at which England appeared to run out of gas was alarming. Ashley Young delivered instead - you know, one of those players out on the wing who can cross well - and John Stones met it with a ferocious header.

Harry Kane's stoppage-time victor delivered England's answer to Belgium's earlier win against Panama and gave them their first opening-game win at a major tournament in 12 years.

"We had total control of the game in the second half and we stayed patient", he said.

Tunisia were handed a controversial first half penalty as Kyle Walker was adjudged to have fouled Fakhreddine Ben Youssef, with VAR confirming the decision that handed the underdogs an undeserved first half equaliser. I think there could have been a couple of penalties, especially when you look at their one. In possession and going forward England looked good, it was their defence that looked like it may cost England this tournament. The opening twenty minutes of the game England's movement was great and caused problems for Tunisia.

This English side lacked vision and creativity from deeper midfield. Jordan Henderson, one of only two survivors from Brazil 2014 in the starting XI alongside Raheem Sterling, started their first attack.

Kane's two goals here were flawless illustrations of the calm and predator's instinct that marks him out as special and took his England record to an outstanding 15 goals in 25 games.

But Harry Maguire won a header from a corner and Kane was on hand at the far post to nod in the victor before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.
