Harvey Weinstein surrenders in NYC on sex crime-related charges

Weinstein's defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said, "I did not come here to try the case", and emphasized how his client was "aware of this for many months" and how he voluntarily surrendered to police.

The charges stem from encounters with two of the dozens of women - some famous, some not - who have accused him of sexual misdeeds. He was arraigned later that morning, and was charged with rape in the first degree for two alleged incidences involving two different women in 2013 and 2014.

The disgraced film producer, who turned himself in to face charges of rape, has kept almost entirely out of the public eye since the New York Times and the New Yorker reported allegations that he had abused women for decades. Brafman says Weinstein vehemently denies the charges and will fight to get them dismissed.

Authorities in several cities have also launched criminal investigations into Weinstein, including in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and London.

"Assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case", he said.

"Mr. Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood, and to the extent that there is bad behavior in that industry, that is not what this is about", the attorney said.

While Collins' support had been public leading up to the vote, Murkowski's and Kennedy's "yes" vote came as a surprise to some. Senate has ever taken on the future of the internet ".

Mr. Weinstein reigned as one of Hollywood's top producers, known as much for his bullying and aggression as for his cinematic success. Weinstein must also wear an electronic monitor, surrender his passport and can not travel beyond NY or CT.

As he surrendered, the 66-year-old Weinstein found himself surrounded by lights and cameras in a spectacle he couldn't control.

"This is an important day in terms of visibility for all women whose lives have been devastated because of the actions of Harvey Weinstein".

The film mogul carried three books under his arm as he surrendered at a New York City police station Friday. Later, in a courthouse booking area, he complained he felt faint and his handcuffs were too tight. If convicted on the most serious charges, Weinstein could face between five and 25 years in prison. Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008.

Attorney Carrie Goldberg represents former actress Lucia Evans, who says Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex in his office in 2004.

Now, with his name redefined as a synonym for sexual abuse, we finally have the images that complete the disgraced film titan's story. Brafman also has said that Weinstein was a "principal target" of an investigation being conducted by the USA attorney's office in Manhattan.

The news of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's arrest Friday morning has taken the internet by storm, flooding the headlines and front pages of publications worldwide. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter on Thursday about the news that Weinstein might soon face charges, actress Rose McGowan, who publicly accused Weinstein of sexual assault in the Times report that opened the floodgates, released a statement. More than 75 women have accused Weinstein of wrongdoing around the globe.

Miramax, the company he founded with his brother, Bob, in 1979 helped reinvent independent cinema with hits like "Pulp Fiction" and "Shakespeare in Love".

But there were rumors in Hollywood for years about Weinstein's pursuit of young actresses.

Brafman said in a May court filing that federal prosecutors in NY had opened a separate criminal investigation into the allegations.

Friday's are the first criminal charges against Weinstein in the scandal that began last fall.

It's been almost eight months since accusations of rape, sex assault and harassment first surfaced against the 66-year-old Weinstein. Allegations have been mounting against Weinstein since last October. The charges happening all these years later, but NY did away with the statute of limitations for adult rape cases in 2006.
