GDPR - What have we done?

"The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which came into force today at midnight, is supposed to give users a free choice, whether they agree to data usage or not". European regulatory authorities, many of whom say they are under-funded, will oversee the new law, with a central body to resolve conflicts.

Instapaper also already lets users delete their accounts. They'll turn over some of their data to academics for in-depth analysis.

With the new regulations in force, companies working in the European Union - or any association or club - must now get express consent to collect personal information, or face hefty fines, the BBC reported.

Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been hit with privacy complaints within hours of GDPR taking effect Friday. Also companies have to explicitly state what personal information they are storing and why - hence all those Privacy Policy updates.

So it significantly ramps up the risk of, for example, having sloppy security, or consent flows that aren't clear and specific enough (if indeed consent is the legal basis you're relying on for processing people's personal information).

Malaysian reformist Anwar Ibrahim walks free after royal pardon
He was set to meet the king after leaving the hospital, and planned to speak to media in the afternoon. His wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who heads Anwar's party, is now the new deputy prime minister.

"To protect them, and meet our obligations, we want to make sure that all our patrons are aware of the new [GDPR] legislation".

That means companies have had to put in place processes for dealing with such requests and educating their workforce because any non-compliance could lead to stiff sanctions.

The GDPR will sweep away the EU's outdated privacy legislation and harmonise how data is processed and handled across the region.

European Union data protection authorities said individuals should be able to transfer data provided by them but not "derived data" created by the service provider such as algorithmic results. So in theory, that could mean that you could call up Microsoft, ask to see what personal information it has about you and maybe ask Microsoft to delete it.

But it's an open question how the rules will affect visitors to Europe.

The end is nigh: Spotify is no longer promoting R. Kelly's music
Hateful material includes content that promotes violence against groups based on race, religion or gender identity, Spotify said . His music does remain available for streaming on Spotify , but the company will not promote it or feature it in playlists.

The GDPR also creates a fine of 4 per cent of global annual turnover or €20m - whichever is greater - for those who fall foul of the law.

The filings will level the playing field for small companies that "usually can not force their customers to agree to policies", Noyb continues.

The move has renewed fears that the law, and others like it, could "Balkanise" the internet and lead to the creation of a two-tier system, with EU-based web users excluded from services and sites offered elsewhere in the world.

Companies found to be in violation of the privacy law can face steep fines.

"They're going to say, "Hey, academics, you want our data, we'll give it to you and we'll even financially support you" - which is complicated - and then they'll be able to study how much false news there is on the platform and how it spreads", Thompson explained.

Game 7 goes Thursday in Nashville, with the victor taking on the expansion Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference final. Rinne was making saves all night in a clutch performance to keep his team in the running for a possible Game 7 in Nashville.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, for instance, promised "global settings and controls" for users during his US congressional testimony in April, but was otherwise vague on the subject. Lots of companies have been misusing your data in smaller ways, like selling it on to third party advertising companies.
