Kim summit in play as Moon visits White House

The South Korean government continued to try to notify North Korea of the names of eight South Korean reporters through a hotline at the truce village of Panmunjeom on Tuesday, but North Korean officials declined to accept the list, according to a government official.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on his way to Washington ahead of Tuesday's talks between Trump and visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Chung denied a New York Times article claiming the American leader is having second thoughts about meeting Kim.

Moon has always been a driving force behind the diplomacy between the United States and North Korea, and personally encouraged Trump to meet with Kim.

Trump tweeted Monday he wanted "North Korea to be VERY successful, but only after signing!" referring to the signing of a denuclearization deal at the June 12 summit, signaling that hosting the summit is not off the table.

Donald Trump's planned summit meeting with Kim Jong Un is still days away but the American president has already stirred things up by warning the North Korean leader of "total decimation", in the way Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi met a gruesome end, "if we don't make a deal".

With just weeks to go and little clarity on what will be discussed or what happens if talks fail, some Korea watchers predict fireworks during Trump's talks with Moon. -South Korea military exercises and from Trump's national security adviser John Bolton. The North Koreans understand that the more Trump is invested in getting to an agreement, the more power they have, particularly since the status quo, while perhaps not being all that pleasant, is something they've been living with for some time.

The North Koreans also seemed particularly upset by Bolton, who called on them to do what Libya did more than a decade ago. He has not been deeply engaged in briefing materials on North Korea's nuclear program, said three people with knowledge of the White House efforts.

The planned destruction of the test site, in Wonsan, represents denuclearization North Korea's way, meaning it isn't permanent, verifiable, irreversible, or complete.

"Anybody who's looked at this issue for years knows that you don't get fairytale endings with North Korea", said Victor Cha, a Korea expert in the George W. Bush administration who was considered for a post as Trump's ambassador to Seoul.

Pyongyang has said it will hold a ceremony to mark the closure between Wednesday and Friday, depending on weather conditions, and that journalists from China, Russia, the United States, Britain and South Korea will be allowed to visit the site. The White House had indicated it would be willing to assist North Korea economically if it gave up its nuclear weapons, but was clear any other steps would be a non-starter without denuclearization happening first.

The meeting further lashed out at state and central government and said that the military can't help in resolving the issues. After several hours of fighting, five militants were killed and a policeman and a soldier wounded, said S.P.

"I expect North Korea to continue using inter-Korean relations to send a message to the USA until the summit", he said.

But South Korea's role has been brought into question since last week when North Korea's chief negotiator derided Seoul as "ignorant and incompetent". Both are eager to support the North Korean economy and defuse the tensions around the regime's nuclear program through diplomacy and negotiation. "If the North Korea-US summit goes well, inter-Korean relations will also improve".

The North's decision to close the Punggye-ri nuclear test site has generally been seen as a welcome gesture by Kim Jong-un to set a positive tone ahead of his summit with Mr. Trump. The two countries are traditional allies, but their relationship was strained over North Korea's nuclear and missile tests and China's enforcement of United Nations sanctions that have choked the North's economy, especially fuel.

However, it remains to be seen if Trump and Moon can keep the goodwill going before the U.S.
