Mulvaney: WH Aide Remark About McCain Dying Was 'Awful' But Just 'Joke'

"This was a private meeting inside the White House". John McCain, according to several sources familiar with the meeting.

Kelly Sadler, a special assistant who handles surrogate communications for the White House, told other aides in a private meeting Thursday that McCain's opposition to Central Intelligence Agency director nominee Gina Haspel does not matter because "he's dying anyway", a White House official told CNN.

Despite publicly refusing to criticize the remark, Sanders told the press staff that Sadler's comment was inappropriate, according to several sources familiar with the meeting.

"I am sure this conversation is going to leak, too".

He had competed with Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell for the starting job throughout spring practice, which concluded April 14. Will this year's defensive line be better than last year's? But mostly, he said Burrow and Haskins were always close .

The Arizona Republican, who was diagnosed in July with primary glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, issued a statement ahead of Haspel's confirmation hearing urging his colleagues to vote against her, citing her "involvement in the so-called enhanced interrogation program" after 9/11.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reportedly scolded her staff on Friday after one White House official's derisive comment about Sen.

Sadler is still employed at the White House, Sanders said Friday. During an appearance on Fox News, Mulvaney called Sadler's comment a "bad joke" but said it was "inconsiderate" that it leaked.

Mercedes Schlapp, the White House director of strategic communications, said Friday during a White House meeting that she stood by Sadler, Axios reported. "We've all said things in private, especially in smaller groups with people we work with, that we'd never said publicly".

Echoing Sanders' private comments to staffers, Mulvaney said the leak was created to hurt Sadler and "completely ignored the harm it would do to the McCain family, which is doubly inconsiderate".

McCain's daughter, Meghan McCain, said she didn't understand how Sadler did not lose her job over the comment. "It was a badly considered joke that she said fell flat", Mulvaney told Fox.

"I believe Gina Haspel is a patriot who loves our country and has devoted her professional life to its service and defense", McCain said in a statement.
