Spotify Announces On-Demand Playlists For Free Users
Apr 25, 2018, 14:00
Spotify's new free tier experience feels like it gained some premium features.
Naturally, Premium is ad-free but it also allows for on-demand, offline or online playback of over 40 million songs without restricting users to tracks present within their discovery playlists.
The new app also makes it easier for free users to create their own playlists. When you have enabled the low data mode on the new Spotify app, you will save up to 75 percent of your mobile data.
These features were detailed today (April 24) by Babar Zafar, the vice president of product development, who explained how the company believes these features will grow Spotify's free user count, which, in turn, creates more paying users.
The free Spotify app is getting a major overhaul with new tools previously only available to users who paid a subscription fee.
Its new free tier could give enough exposure to the app for Indians to recognise Spotify's superior technology.
For starters, there are now ways to play music on-demand without paying for Spotify. A new Data Saver mode will optimize the app to use less data while streaming, a move that could make its service more appealing in areas with limited connectivity. He also pointed out that 71 percent of Spotify's monthly active users - 157 million worldwide - are under the age of 34. These on-demand playlists will be unique to you, based on your musical tastes, and may include Spotify-curated playlists ranging from RapCaviar and Viva Latino to Ultimate Indie and Alternative R&B as well as personalized playlists like Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Daily Mix.

The new features are aimed at making the music experience more tailored to what the users want to hear now.
Users pay between $5 and $10 for a paid subscription to Spotify. "Now, Spotify is both the radio station and the record store", he said, pausing before throwing a little shade at the radio industry, "but unlike radio, we actually share the revenue with artists and users".
Likewise, those in the free tier can now listen to any music they want, at any time, and for as many times.
With Spotify's continued effort of removing clutter from the app, users will now be able to save songs by selecting the heart icon.
