Back in 2011, the Federal Trade Commission struck a deal with Facebook to have its privacy practices audited once every two years by an external company.
The report covers February 12, 2015, to February 11, 2017.
Facebook Inc's privacy practices were cleared by auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in an assessment completed previous year of the period in which data analytics consultancy Cambridge Analytica gained access to the personal data of millions of Facebook users.
PwC essentially said that Facebook was operating an effective privacy program during that time period.
As described above, Facebook has identified reasonably foreseeable, material risks, both internal and external, that could result in Facebook's unauthorized collection, use, or disclosure of covered information, and assessed the sufficiency of any safeguards in place to control these risks as required by Part IV of the [consent decree].
Facebook initially discovered that the "thisisyourdigitallife" app's developer sold the harvested information of millions of users to Cambridge Analytica in 2015.
The agreement requires that Facebook users give "affirmative express consent" any time that data they haven't made public is shared with a third party. "That's extraordinary! That's, 'How could that have happened?' stuff".
The audit by PricewaterhouseCoopers is posted on the FTC's website, though it is heavily redacted. The latest external audit was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in 2017. Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, and Ashlie Beringer, the social media company's deputy general counsel, said in a statement: "We've heard loud and clear that privacy settings and other important tools are too hard to find, and that we must do more to keep people informed". This was done to make sure that Facebook didn't break the 2011 FTC consent decree and deceive customers.
Facebook plans to redesign the account settings section of their mobile app while also creating a new privacy shortcut menu that should allow users greater control over their account security and personal information. "We appreciate the opportunity to answer questions the FTC may have".
