"Killer grandmother" captured in South Texas

Apr 21, 2018, 00:43

It ended a weeks-long manhunt.

Authorities believe she used the same firearm to kill Hutchinson that she allegedly used to kill her husband.

Lois Riess, 56, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, is wanted in connection with two murders.

According to authorities, Riess was arrested at 8:25 central time on South Padre Island and is now sitting in the South Padre City jail.

Speaking at a press conference Friday, Lee County, Fla.

Riess was a regular there, said one casino employee, and has been accused in Minnesota state court affidavits of stealing money from her disabled sister to spend at the casino, though she was never charged with a crime. "So she seemed to have let her guard down a bit", he said.

76ers Joel Embiid Clears Concussion Protocol, Remains out for Game 2
Brown said the Sixers' dominant Game 1 win Saturday did not factor in the team's decision to sit Embiid for Game 2 . This will prove to be key for the Heat as he will able to relieve some pressure off Dragic and Johnson.

"She smiles and looks like anyone's mother or grandmother", Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said.

Authorities say a woman suspected in the deaths of her husband and a woman in Florida had checked into a South Texas tourist town motel and was socializing in a bar when she was arrested.

Police fear the "armed and dangerous" woman may kill again and have warned members of the public not to approach her. She had been shot to death, presumably by the same gun that Reiss had used to fatally shoot her husband.

She had been seen on March 23 at a convenience store and casino in northern Iowa.

Whether or not Riess will be returned to Lee County to face charges is still being worked out between Florida and Texas officials.

Riess was arrested on warrants for second-degree murder, grand theft, grand theft of a vehicle and criminal use of personal identification. That's where investigators allege she killed 59-year-old Pamela Hutchinson of Bradenton, Florida. Hutchinson's ID, credit cards and vehicle were missing from her home. It is a white 2005 Acura TL with Florida license plate Y37TAA.

Riess should be considered armed and risky and should not be approached, the sheriff's office cautions. Murder charges out of Dodge County are pending.

A manager at the Smokin' Oyster Brewery confirmed that Pamela Hutchinson paid the bill that she and Minnesota fugitive Lois Riess ran up during their two-hour visit on the late afternoon of April 5.

Barry said Hutchinson and her father had been married for 20 years. Authorities went to the casino but Riess had already left.

Authorities say an eyewitness spotted a woman matching Riess' description at a restaurant on South Padre Island.
