All missiles reached targets in Syria, Pentagon says

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she authorized the coordinated response in order to degrade the Assad regime's chemical weapons capability.

"I think we dealt them a severe blow", Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said at the Pentagon after the overnight bombing.

The former missile base was assessed to have been used by the Syrian regime to "keep chemical weapon precursors stockpiled in breach of Syria's obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention", the MoD said in a statement. The targets of that strike included Syrian aircraft, aircraft shelters, petroleum and logistical storage facilities, ammunition supply bunkers, air defense systems and radar.

The army said almost 110 missiles hit targets in the capital Damascus and other areas, and air defence systems brought a lot of them down.

The strikes were launched in a joint effort by France, the United Kingdom and the U.S.in response to a suspected chemical attack ordered by Syrian President Bashar Assad on civilians that killed dozens of people.

Trump has also said the the U.S.is prepared to continue the attacks until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons.

Trump called it a "perfectly executed strike" in a tweet Saturday. Could not have had a better result. Kenneth McKenzie said on Saturday during a press briefing at the Pentagon about the strikes carried out on Friday. The United States has accused Assad of using chemical weapons against locals outside Damascus, killing around 42 adults and children.

Mattis, who US officials said had earlier warned in internal debates against too large an attack that would risk confrontation with Russian Federation, described the strikes as a "one time shot" to dissuade Assad from "doing this again".

- Strikes were launched by British, French and USA forces at 2am BST at three sites connected with the Syrian regime's chemical weapons programme.

Mr. Assad's key ally Iran also slammed the attack, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei describing Western leaders as "criminals".

She said nearly a century of global acceptance about not using chemical weapons had been eroded in Douma and Salisbury.

The current escalation of the situation in Syria "has a destructive effect on the whole system of worldwide relations", the Kremlin said.

They continued saying that there was "no indication Russian air defense systems were employed", and that they have "not seen any military response from actors in Syria since the western strikes".

Mrs May said "every possible diplomatic channel" had been explored before authorising the strikes, adding that it was not a decision she had taken lightly. Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the U.S. and its allies.

The US however insist a "deconfliction channel" with Russian Federation continues to operate, details of which remain secret.
