Russian transport plane crashes in Syria killing all 32 on board

The defence ministry is investigating the crash, but preliminary data suggests it could be a technical malfunction, it adds. Both the crew members and passengers were killed.

Russia's An-26 transport plane crashed while landing at Hmeymim airfield at around 15:00 Moscow time on March 6.

Russian forces have been in Syria since September 2015, supporting President Bashar al-Assad's fight against opposition groups and the Islamic State.

Russia's Investigative Committee said on Tuesday it had opened a criminal case into the crash of a Russian military transport plane in Syria.

A RUSSIAN cargo plane has crashed in Syria killing 32 people on board, the country's Defence Ministry confirmed.

The investigators also said Russian air strikes on a market in Atareb, west of Aleppo, killed at least 84 people last November. The aircraft crashed while landing, about 1,640 ft (500 m) before the runway at Khmeimim military airbase in western Syria.

Scotland Yard, the FBI, Czech and Italian police and Europol are helping Slovakian authorities investigate the killings. Other commemorative gatherings are planned in two dozen cities overseas , including London, Paris and Brussels.

Russia's "Novosti" news agency also quoted a senior U.S. administration official as saying that Secretary of Defense James Mattis was "adamantly" against acting militarily in response to the reports about Damascus' chlorine attacks and that National Security Adviser Hebert McMaster "was for it".

This is the second incident of a plane in a span of just one month. Moscow denies they exist. But the drones were shot down before they could cause any damage, according to the Russian military's Facebook page.

Opinion polls indicate most Russians support the Syria operation.
