Melania Trump got her green card through 'Einstein visa' program. But how?

According to a Washington Post article, Trump received an EB-1 visa in 2001. The comments came after a story broke that Melania was granted an EB-1 Visa from her native home Slovenia in 2001, also known as the "Einstein Visa", that is awarded to individuals who "demonstrate extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics through sustained national or global acclaim".

Only five people from Slovenia, the first lady's birthplace, received green cards under the EB-1 program, the report said.

Trump's career as a model includes European runway shows, Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition, and a cover for British GQ.

Questions have been raised about Melania Trump's immigration status for months as President Trump continues to rail against so-called "chain migration", a process where US citizens and permanent residents can sponsor close non-citizen family members for a green card. The Post reports they are close to receiving their citizenship.

"We called it the Einstein visa", said former Rep. Bruce Morrison (D-CT), then-chairman of the House subcommittee that wrote the Immigration Act of 1990 defining EB-1.

The First Lady's attorney, Michael Wildes, told the newspaper that she was "more than amply qualified and solidly eligible" to receive a green card as part of the program. "There is no reason to adjudicate her petition publicly when her privacy is so important to her", he said.

In recent months, he has posted a string of tweets slamming "chain migration" as "not acceptable".

Morrison, the former congressman and immigration expert, said that Melania Trump's resume in 2001 seems "inconsistent" with the requirements of the visa.

To obtain a green card for extraordinary ability, one needs to prove they have qualifications such as evidence of commercial successes in the performing arts or evidence of original contributions to a field.

"What did she submit?" asked David Leopold, an immigration lawyer and a past president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association asked in the "Post".

Melania reportedly dropped out of college during her freshman year before becoming a model, so Rose (and many others) question how she was awarded an Einstein Visa.

Melania Trump came to the USA from Slovenia in 1996.
